Changing German VAT provider before January?
Your handover checklist.

Your German tax number stays with your company, so a handover changes who files, not your registration. Answer a few questions and get the checklist for your situation, with the exact January 2027 dates.

Step 1

Tell us where you stand

Skip any question you cannot answer yet: the checklist below shows the general version for it, and updates as you answer. Nothing you pick here is stored or sent.

Who files your German VAT returns today?
How often do you file your VAT return (UStVA)?

The tax office assigned this. A past return or the letter that gave you your tax number shows it.

Do you have a filing extension (Dauerfristverlängerung)?

An extension moves every return deadline back by one month. If someone applied for it, the tax office sent an approval letter.

Is any return overdue?

A period whose deadline has passed without a filing receipt.

Where do your sales records live?

Why now

Why the January handover is worth planning

The return for December, or for the fourth quarter, falls due in January or early February. The first returns of the new year follow within weeks. A handover that is agreed before those dates leaves every period with exactly one owner. One that is left open is how a return gets filed twice, or not at all.

Switching does not touch your registration: your tax number and VAT ID were issued to your company, not to your provider. What changes is who represents you at the tax office and who files. How switching to Vaytax works, or the full guide to switching German VAT provider.
